How to Zip a File
A beginner's guide to creating ZIP files on every platform. Simple step-by-step instructions.
What Is Zipping?
Zipping a file means compressing it into a .zip archive. This: • Makes the file smaller (for text-heavy files) • Bundles multiple files into one • Makes files easier to share via email or messaging Every major operating system can create ZIP files without extra software — and you can also do it in any browser, with no install at all.
In Your Browser (tarpanda)
If you can't or don't want to use OS tools (locked work laptop, Chromebook, public computer), tarpanda creates ZIPs entirely in the browser: 1. Open tarpanda and switch to "Create" mode 2. Drop the file(s) or folder(s) onto the create zone 3. Pick a compression level (Fast, Normal, or Maximum) 4. Click "Create ZIP" and download Nothing uploads. The file leaves your machine only when you choose to share it.
